Framing football shirts options
The procedure to frame a football shirt is quite a time consuming event. First the client and the framer have to decide on how the football shirt should be folded. All options are on the table but the most usual method is to double over the shirts sleeves. This is done to keep the overall size of the frame down.
Once this is agreed the next step is to decide on the particular box frame method that will best enhance the shirt. It is necessary to box frame shirts as the extra depth of the molding will ensure that the material is kept away from the glass and sit back in a bath of colour.
Basically there are two framing methods.
- To surround the shirt in a mount, of up to 2 inches in width. This mount will sit at the front of the frame against the glass and creates the impression that one is looking through a window at the shirt. This is a very attractive method as the mount will cast a shadow around the shirt.
- Mount the shirt on a coloured mountcard and create spacers of of the same colour. This method has a more open feel and can work very harmoniously with the colour of the shirt.
Box frame moldings are not produced in the ranges that other frames are made. They are manufactured in all the prime colors, and black and white and grey so there will be one that compliments any shirt. I have framed many a shirt and have never found it difficult to choose a frame.
It is the client that usually has a very clear idea about the colour choice for their frame and surround mount, although they may on occasion need to be swayed away from making a terrible choice.
So that the eye is not sent into a frenzy by different focal points it is best to compliment the shirts colour but not to compete with it. Although there are no hard and fast rules, keeping the mount colour and the frame colour in the same colour range although with different tones can work very well.
The price of framing football shirts
All depends on the overall size of the frame and the amount of work needed to complete it. The client might want a plaque or a dedication to be included. This will require a second window to be cut into the surround mount and will increase the size of the frame.
At all times the picture framer will try to keep the overall size of the frame down. This is done to reduce the weight of the frame.
